Any company which desires to start a new venture will require a capital for it. If not having the required capital in hand these companies make a public offer, in which they can offer their shares to the investors to generate the required money. This offer is termed as an IPO (initial public offering) in which the shares of the company are released at a decided price and number. The number and cost of the shares in the IPO depends mainly on the capital required by the companies for starting this project. Then these shares enter the secondary market and are available for trading by investors through exchanges like the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange), NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation) and the TSE (Toronto Stock Exchange).

The price of share mainly depends on its demand and supply in the market. The more the demand by the investors the higher is the price and more the supply of the share the lower is the market price. Therefore the demand and supply decides the price of the share in the market. The trading of shares is done through the exchanges like the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) or NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation) and the TSE (Toronto Stock Exchange) where they can be bought and sold.

Even though the Forex markets and investing have existed previously, they differed from now in that they were only available to the ultra rich. These people have large amounts of money and take charge over the market.

But with the advent of the Internet many of these avenues have opened up to individual investors. There have been lots of automated Forex trading tools and other types of software that have come out to assist in your Forex trading.

First of all, you need a basic understanding of currency markets, and what you are getting into when you start trading. Many investors are challenged and overwhelmed, when they explore new markets without prior expertise.

The results may include massive losses. Many people have lost a huge amount in their stocks and mutual funds due to the current US economy. This does not have to happen to you.

Some general facts about the forex market are as follows:

1. It’s open 24/7 and year-round.

2. Over US$2 trillion in transactions are conducted in every 24 hour period making it the largest market on earth

3. Due to this incredibly high volume it’s virtually impossible to corner or move the market or matter what how big the size of the transactions you’re able to do.

4. Also due to the huge size it is the most liquid market on earth so when you want to get out and exit a trade you can do so almost instantaneously

5. Setting up an account is basically the same as setting up a stock trading account like you would normally do at any other brokerage

What currency can be traded on the foreign exchange market?

Various leading currencies are available for trade in basic pairs, including the United States, Australian, and Canadian dollars, as well as the Euro, Japanese yen, Swiss franc and British pound.

The currencies are generally coupled, which is distinctive to the foreign market.

The seven basic pairs are as follows:

1. The US dollar/Euro

2. The US dollar/Japanese yen

3. The US dollar/British pound

4. The US dollar/Swiss Franc

5. The US dollar/Canadian dollar

6. The US dollar/Australian dollar

7. The US dollar/New Zealand dollar

The statistics support the claim that over 70% of trades are conducted in the US/Euro dollar pairing. Pips, a specific jargon term used by the Forex market space, refers to the situation in which trades are done. This is the smallest unit or increment a currency pair can trade in.

For example, you have probably seen some of the quotes that you can buy one euro for $1.53 US. This would be the Euro/USD dollar pair. So if you were to trade 10 pips of this pair then you would be able to get 10 for a price of $15.30 US.

Then of course you would be hoping that the euro would rise against the dollar so that when you went to sell your 10 you could get say $16 US for them which would leave you a profit of $.70 US.

100,000 units of the currency of your country is the general transaction size in the forex (4x). There is also a mini transaction of 10,000 units and a micro-transaction of 1000 units of your base currency. To be able to trade in these smaller lots you have to have a specialized and specific Forex account which is either a micro-account or a mini account.

Forex gives you the concession of massive leverage but you should be extra-careful while handling it. If the trade ends out in your favor you can reap an enormous amount profit with little investment. However, when the trade goes against you even though you only put a little bit out of pocket you could lose massively more out of your entire account.

Before risking your hard-earned money in this market place it would be good to educate yourself on the Forex system before opportunistic people take advantage of your lack of knowledge of this profitable program.

The quest for the best retirement states sounds like a good idea for people concerned with finding a great place to retire to at the end of the career. Lots of controversies and debates exist about tax-foul and tax-friendly conditions, but will anyone relocate just to save money? The location of your home greatly influences the share in the local taxes, which is why the entire retirement lifestyle may revolve around real estate issues for lots of retirees and their families.

The best retirement states are also called the ‘no tax heavens’ but things may not be as bright as you expect despite the fact that taxes are close to zero. There are other issues and worries that bother retirees and they are not always income. Consider homeownership taxes and the sales taxes before deciding to relocate, because this is thin ice you’re treading on. Maybe some of the best retirement states have a friendly policy for the retiree’s tax income, but the real estate taxes could be exorbitant.

People make the mistake of focusing too much on income taxes when searching for the best retirement states, but it can cost them dearly; instead they should check the property-tax situation first because with properties, things have gone from bad to worse every year. There is plenty of information on the Internet and with central organization offices where you can inquire about the conditions not only in a certain state but in a specific neighborhood as well. Even books have been written on the topic of America’s best retirement towns.

With the help of the Internet you can find information on the leisure and cultural activities, the estimated living costs, the criminal rate and the climate. In many cases the figures you see in charts are tax estimates serving as a model to prove what the situation would be like in a certain hypothetical condition. Also keep in mind that the cost of utilities is seldom taken into account. These being said, it becomes clear that the classification of the best retirement states is neither simple nor easy.

Statistically speaking there are parts of the United States that deserve the name of best retirement states, but in day-to-day life things may be less clear. There is a very small number of Americans who choose to relocate to some distant part of the country. Retirees find it difficult to leave family and friends behind, not to mention the effort of coping with new challenges brought by a possible re-accommodation to a new living environment. Getting to live in America’s best retirement states is certainly more easily said than done!

Growth Stocks Investing

Posted by: Ahmad Hassam | Comments (0)

When you start looking for good stocks, you often come across these terms like large cap, mid cap, small cap, growth and value. Let’s discuss these terms for a moment. Capitalization or cap refers to the combined value of all the share of a company’s stocks. The division between large cap, mid cap and small cap are often blurry and not sharp.

Statistical studies of large cap, mid cap and the small cap stocks has shown that over the years small cap stocks have outperformed. Mid caps are companies with $1 to $5 Billion in capitalization and small caps are companies with $250 million to $1 Billion in capitalization. Anything below $250 million can be considered as micro cap. However the following divisions are generally accepted: Large caps are companies with over $5 Billion in capitalization.

What is the P/E ratio? The P/E ratio divides the price of the stock by the earnings per share. Suppose, company ABC stock is presently selling for $50. Now suppose that last year company ABC earned $5 for every share of the stock outstanding. This means stock ABC P/E ratio is 50/5=10. So the higher the P/E ratio, the more investors are willing to pay for the stock.

Let’s make this clear with an example. Do you know how to read the balance sheet of a company? One of the most important things in doing research on a stock is the balance sheet of the company. Suppose, company ABC stock is presently selling for $50. Now suppose that last year company ABC earned $5 for every share of the stock outstanding. This means stock ABC P/E ratio is 50/5=10. So the higher the P/E ratio, the more investors are willing to pay for the stock. So what is the P/E ratio? The P/E ratio divides the price of the stock by the earnings per share. Over the years, studies have shown that the P/E ratio is somehow related with the growth of a company. Now the higher the P/E ratio, the more growth the company is supposed to have. So it can be either the company is growing real fast of the investor have high hopes of its growth. Now these hopes can be realistic or foolish, you never know!

The lower the P/E ratio, the more value the company has. Low P/E ratio companies are not considered to be the movers and shakers in the market. Now, if you follow financial news than you must know that the large growth companies always grab the headlines. But do the growth stocks really make best investment? According to Fama and French, two famous researchers who did ground breaking research on stocks, over the last 77 years, large growth stocks have only seen 9.9% annualized rate of return as compared to 11.5% for the large value stocks.

So most of these growth stocks become highly popular in a small period of time! Everyone rushes to buy these growth stocks thinking that they are great investments. The most probable cause seems to be their immense popularity. Since most of the headlines are captures by high growth companies, investors seem to think that they are the best investments. Now intuitively you might have thought that growth stocks are better. What can be the reason for their lower performance over the years?

Think about Google, how its stock price shot up within a matter of weeks after it hit the market. Weeks after that it began to cool off. So large growth stocks tend to get overpriced before you are able to buy them!

Many analysts are of the opinion that commodity investing maybe the best investments in the early part of the 21st century. Take the name of oil, oil is the most heavily traded commodity in the world right now. Gold is another commodity that is reaching record price levels. Gold prices for the first time have breached the unheard of $1000 per ounce barrier. Investing in commodities may be the something that investors thought of boring and dull only a few decades back but not anymore now. If you are interested in investing in companies that are involved in the production, transformation and distribution of commodities, than one of the best ways to do so is through investing in the Master Limited Partnership (MLP).

MLPs are public entities that trade on public exchanges. An MLP issues shares that trade on an exchange just like a company stocks that trades on an exchange. You can invest in an MLP by buying its shares on an exchange. The shares that an MLP issues are called Units and the investors who own them are known as Unit Holders.

When you invest in an MLP, you are essentially investing in public partnership. There are tax advantages to investing in MLP. Unlike regular corporations, an MLP is only taxed once. Now most of the MLPs trade on the New York Stock Exchange. A few MLPs also trade on the NASDAQ and the AMEX.

Congressional Legislation, any MLP that derives 90% or more of its income from the production, distribution and transformation of commodities qualifies for this tax exempt scheme.

This tax advantage gives an MLP competitive advantage as compared to other corporations when competing for assets. This means a huge advantage for an MLP. Now an MLP is run by a General Partner (GP). In most cases, the majority of these GPs in MLPs are other corporate entities setup with the specific purpose of running an MLP.

The role of a GP is very important in an MLP. You as an investor in the assets of MLP might have a very limited role or say in its running. You can think of yourself as a sleeping partner in the MLP. In most cases, the majority of these GPs in MLPs are other corporate entities setup with the specific purpose of running an MLP. This tax advantage gives an MLP competitive advantage as compared to other corporations when competing for assets. This means a huge advantage for an MLP. Now an MLP is run by a General Partner (GP). But you don’t have to worry much about the GP. Most GPs do a good job of running the MLP as it is in their financial interests. GPs know that if they don’t make sound management and investment decisions, most of the investors my eventually deicide to divest themselves from the units of the MLP. Now you must know as a limited partner in an MLP, you have limited voting rights. This means when you invest in an MLP, you are giving away the keys of ownership to the GP. This means you are out of the decision making in an MLP.

An MLP is obligated to distribute all available cash back to its unit holders on a quarterly basis, so you will be getting a quarterly income from your units. Secondly as the MLP expands and grows overtime, its units may give you capital gain as well. Investing in MLP units can give you quarterly cash flows as well as appreciation of the unit price. However, always do your due diligence when you want to invest in an MLP.
